tristen84: (Spike: eh?)
A few days ago I was so jetlagged that I woke up at 5 in the morning and couldn't get back to sleep. So I decided to try my hand at writing a FP fic for a [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking. Now, it so happens the person whose stocking I wanted to stuff prefers crossovers, slash and stories with (graphic) sex in them...all things I personally don't generally like to read or write. Not that there's anything wrong with that stuff, but as a gen girl I tend to like stories about friendship and family rather than romance, etc. So I wasn't expecting to get inspired to write a story that would suit her preferences at all.

That morning, in about two hours, I whipped up an SGA/FP crossover story with Sam/Sheppard slash and sex! Huh? how the hell did that happen? And I even kind of enjoyed writing it, too! ...I'm still scratching my head at myself. ;o)
tristen84: (Reading Shep)
The other day I was thinking about what I'd like to see in future SGA movies (aside from major Shep whump, obviously) and to my own surprise my thoughts led me to a crossover movie with SG-1. Don't get me wrong, I want the SGA movies to be about the SGA characters, not about SG-1, but I was thinking if they were to do a major crossover movie aside from the respective SGA and SG-1 movies, I'd be all for it.

I mean, I know that's probably never gonna happen, since the salaries of all these major players combined are gonna be through the roof, but I'd love to see this huge action-adventure spectacle in which Earth is in such terrible danger that both the Atlantis team and SG-1 are called upon to save the day. I can just see this awesome scene with the eight of them back-to-back, guns blazing, with Sheppard coming up with a brilliant, if rather rash, plan, Cam agreeing with it almost immediately, and Rodney and Sam feverishly trying to figure out how to make it work. I would love to see the eight of them together like that, fighting for their lives, for each other and for mankind. (yes, I do have a sense for the overly dramatic sometimes).

But like I said, it's never gonna happen and if I had to choose between getting an SGA movie or a crossover with SG-1, I would go for an SGA movie, no question. It's just fun to think about what-ifs ;o)

Wow, it's been a while since I last posted on here, and I've been remiss in commenting on recent SGA S4 episodes both on GW and here. So I've decided, as a sort of late New Year's resolution to post more often (yeah, I wonder how long that's gonna last, too...no, no, mustn't think like that!), and what better to write about than SGA? *grins*

I've really been enjoying S4; I really think both TPTB have stepped up their writing, because a lot of it has been so awesome! Especially the character moments and the teamyness this year have blown me away.

So anyway, I thought I'd share some of my thoughts on a couple of recent eps, starting from Spoils of War onwards. I know I won't be saying anything new or interesting that hasn't already been said about these eps as I'm extremely late doing this, but I like to get some of my thoughs on paper (virtual or otherwise) for myself. So starting with Spoils of War, discussions will be under the cut, just in case!

So. Awesome episode! *blinks* Wow, I had more to say about this ep than I thought!

Quarantine

So, not bad, I certainly enjoyed it, but it could've been done a little better.

Harmony )

So, loved the McShep and the banter (I just adore those two spending time together, and I'm not even that much into slash), Harmony was a little bit annoying and the ep could've been done slightly more realistic. But overall, a good filler episode :o)

Outcast )

So yeah, awesome, awesome ep. One of my favourites this season and definitely one I'll be watching over and over!

Whew! *wipes sweat off brow* I think that's about enough for one day! Gotta give my fingers a break from typing by watching an SGA ep... Guess which one I'll be watching? ;o

ETA: this damn LJ-cut is driving me crazy; I've been tinkering with it all day, but I just can't get it to work properly! *grumbles* So please forgive the poor format, linking and such.

Saw this on Pocus' LJ. Very cool quiz! ;o) And Sheppy would be my best buddy! *grins*

Now, I promise I'll actually WRITE an entry soon; I haven't done much with my LJ lately aside from posting quiz results. But I've been sick and haven't had the energy to do much for the past week or so. I'll do better next time!

Who would be your best Stargate Atlantis buddy?

Sheppard: Get ready to tackle complex tactical situations and fight off many, many wraith. If you lived on Atlantis, you'd be spending most of your time alongside the newly promoted Lt. Colonel John Sheppard.

Saw this on Alipeep's LJ and decided to give it a go. I'm not much like Sheppy at all! Well, it's not like I didn't already know that ;) I mean, brave? Me? Uh-uh. :D But I'll settle for Carson ;)

Which Stargate Atlantis character are you most like?
Your Result: Dr. Carson Beckett

Kind-hearted, sincere, loveable, and a good person. Dr. Beckett is a medical doctor, and he cares for everyone around him. By being simmilar in personality to him, it means that you are noble and genuine, and really, really nice. This is living proof that you don't need to be exceptionally strong to be a strong person. Plus, you're smart, too! ^^

Dr. Radek Zelenka

Dr. Elizabeth Weir

Teyla Emmagen

Col. John Sheppard

Ronan Dex

Dr. Rodney McKay

For me, the hardest thing about writing fanfiction is dialogue. Dialogue is such an important part of writing in that it's basically a window to your characters. It tells your reader how well you know the characters you're writing about. Being an avid reader of fanfiction myself, the dialogue is what makes or breaks a story for me. Of course, plot is also important. A story needs to be well-constructed, well thought-out, and grammar and spelling have to be up to par.

But good dialogue is vital, because it reflects a character's personality and attitude. Especially when writing about characters from a TV-show or a movie, it's important to get the characters to 'sound' right. You have to really get into the character's head to be able to anticipate what he/she might do or say in a certain situation.

Some writers are very, very good at it; it seems to come to them naturally. Other people, like me, have a really tough time getting the characters down just right. I have been successful once or twice (in other fandoms), and some characters are easier to write for than others, but I find SGA especially difficult to write for.

The character I have the most trouble writing for is McKay. In this case, it's not so much getting his character down right that I find difficult, it's the scientific mumbo-jumbo and the technobabble that gets me. I am not good at writing technobabble, nor am I good at thinking up (scientific) ways to get the team out of a harrowing situation. Since that's basically what Rodney does, being able to write about it is rather important. :) Which is why I usually end up writing tags, because it often means that the brilliant escape plan has already been thought up, explained and carried out, leaving me to write about the aftermath. Yes, I guess you could say I'm lazy :)

Another thing I have trouble with is the banter between Sheppard and McKay. I absolutely adore their easy banter on the show, but I have a hard time thinking of snappy comebacks for both characters. I'm not sure if that's to do with the fact that I'm not good at snappy comebacks myself in RL or if it means that I just don't know the characters well enough yet.

Either way, my problems with writing dialogue and with thinking up decent plots is what has kept me from writing a Shep-whump story of my own. So I'm taking the easy way out by just writing short scenes/drabbles and tags. But I take comfort in the fact that it's good practise and that it helps me to get to know the characters better. :)
